Prof. J. Andrew Harris in the Division of Social Science, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a research assistant to support a series of projects related to the political economy of Africa.
The successful applicant will employ their data skills in R (and/or Python) to support the production of a book-length manuscript and series of social science articles focusing on local politics in Sub-Saharan Africa. The candidate will build data for analysis from structured (e.g., GIS data, survey data) and unstructured (e.g., text, satellite images) data sources, organize literature reviews, undertake statistical analyses, and prepare publication quality graphs and tables. The candidate should have some experience with spatial data in R or Python. You should be sufficiently proficient in R/Python such that you can teach yourself new skills to address problems encountered during the research process. The candidate should be comfortable working in a team environment, coordinating a group of undergraduate researchers via Slack/Zoom and, if conditions allow, in person. You will meet regularly with Prof. Harris to discuss progress, and weekly with the undergraduate research team. The candidate will possess excellent writing and editing skills, and be able to use (or quickly learn) LaTeX and Rmarkdown. Working knowledge of common social science research design and causal inference is useful but can be learned on the job. The candidate must be able to work independently and keep deadlines. This is a great position for recent university or Masters graduates looking for hand-on experience with social science research prior to pursuing a PhD.
Applicants must have a BA/BS in the social sciences or a related field that provides them with the statistical and coding knowledge required for the position.
For consideration, applicants need to submit a cover letter (which discusses the candidate’s experience with the skills mentioned above and other relevant experience), a recent writing sample, and a curriculum vitae (with reference contact information), all in PDF format. If you have any questions, please email Prof. J. Andrew Harris at . Candidates passing to later rounds may be asked to demonstrate skill proficiency related to this position.
The terms of employment are very competitive and include housing and educational subsidies for children. Applications will be accepted immediately and candidates will be considered until the position is filled. The position will begin in late August/early September 2021 for a period of one year.
